Gates Foundation Secures Diplomatic Privileges in Kenya

Oct 26 – The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has affirmed its commitment to working with the Kenyan government under the Privileges and Immunities Act, ensuring alignment with the country’s regulatory framework.

Buhle Makamanzi, the Foundation’s Deputy Director of Global Communications in Africa, highlighted that their operations in Kenya are “in alignment with the typical agreements Kenya makes with other foundations and nonprofits,” ensuring compliance with local laws and policies.

In a recent gazette notice, Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi outlined that the Gates Foundation will now have the capacity to enter into contracts, engage in legal proceedings, and manage properties in line with Kenyan law. The foundation’s staff will also receive certain privileges typically granted to diplomatic officials, including tax exemptions and immunity from legal actions connected to their official duties.

Founded in 2000 by Bill and Melinda Gates, the foundation has been instrumental in advancing healthcare and development initiatives across more than 140 countries. Kenya’s support for the foundation’s regional operations reflects the government’s broader strategy to attract international partnerships that strengthen healthcare services and boost investment.
